Greenplay Corconut testing

Trees are not harmed in any way from harvesting. Our product is sourced from carefully managed and protected environments on the coast of Portugal. We are key promoters of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and certified in both the principals and proper stewardship of forest management in Portugal. The bark from the indigenous oak trees is harvested in sequence every nine years with the trees living for more than 150 years.

What makes PFC ProFormance Cork, superior to other cork infill products is that we utilize the inner, lower-density portion of the bark as opposed to the higher-density, outer portion of the bark. This is very important with regards to durability and performance. When compared, the lower-density material (+/- 140 kg/m3) utilized for PFC will remain resilient and outlast the more brittle (+/- 200 kg/m³ or higher) and inferior-quality outer material.

The Whistler Tree

The town of Montijo located in the Alentejo region of Portugal, is home to the world's largest Cork Oak. Named for the countless songbirds that perch in its tree-top, the Whistler Tree is over 200 years old.

A single harvest from this particular tree has been known to supply as much as 2,200 lbs. of cork (1,000kgs), whereas average production from a typical tree averages only 132 lbs. (60Kgs).

A Cork Oak produces cork tissue until it is 150 to 200 years old, during which time it may be stripped 15 to 18 times.

The Cork industry is highly sustainable, taking nature's raw material that is extracted cyclically from the cork trees without ever harming them while promoting the economic and social sustainability of protected areas that are always at risk of desertification.

The Cork Forest in Portugal, (700,000 hectares), known as "Montado," is a typical Iberian landscape which is key in supporting a natural bio-diversity, including some of the most endangered species in the world.

Animal species inhabiting cork oak forests include: Iberian Lynxes, Imperial Eagles, Black Storks, Wolves and Wild Bears.
